The Me I Want To Be

The other night I sat at work in a few slow moments paging through a catalog I had received in the mail. It had tons of different halloween decorations that were so cute. There was a set of cups/goblet things that were the greatest and I was thinking how cool it would be to get those and have a halloween party. Then I remembered that in all likelyhood if I bought them, they would sit in my cupboards for my someday life. The life I wish I lived but don’t. The life where I have parties and I have friends who would come to them. Which isn’t to say I don’t have friends but I guess I speak of IRL friends. And I have those too but it seems like not nearly enough for a party unless it was a party of 3 or 4. This bugs me too, especially since I’m unsure of exactly how I got here. I’ve tried planning parties a few times to the tune of mass failure. I think there were 2 or 3 where absolutely no one showed up. No one called, no one showed up of numerous people who said yes they would be there. At the time this was devastating. Then there are the friendships that have just fallen apart or whatever it is that happens. I know some have become distant because we have honestly grown apart, found different directions. For instance a very close friend whom I was friends with for many years who then became very religious. It felt like we had nothing to talk about and nothing in common, even like she was judging me or trying to change me into something that would fit better in her world. I do know that I feel bad sometimes that things aren’t what they used to be.
I feel like I left her behind and I know how much it hurts thinking about all the friends I’ve had in the past and some more recently where I was the one who felt left behind. And I make myself a little crazy wondering what happened. Wondering what I did wrong. Because it always seems like it had to have been something that I did. I do realize that possibly this feeling is related to severely low self esteem, assuming that the friendship ended because of something I did. However there seems to be enough instances where friendships ended abruptly without a visible reason such as a fight, disagreement or something that was the catalyst for an end. Which then because of my low self esteem leaves me feeling as if there is something about me this is unlikeable and or that people don’t really like me and would rather not be around me. This fear then leads to me not reaching out to people and trying to plan things but instead waiting for someone to invite me which seems to become more and more rare with the exception of a few people whom I feel confident enough to pick up the phone and call or go visit. Forget planning a party and inviting people over. The rare occasion where I do try to reach out and don’t get a response of some sort seems only to fuel the fear that I am unlikeable. I’ve been told before to just start reaching out but it just seems so far beyond my reach to get past all the shit in my head first. Which then makes me sad so I try to just not think about it. Not think about how I would love to have a group of women friends who got together on a semi regular basis for a potluck or drinks and an evening of girl talk or something. But then maybe that only exists in the books I’ve read. It also makes me worry that I’ll suck as a parent. Is it possible to teach a child self esteem when I have almost none? Is it possible to have a child become an adult who is confident and sure of themselves when I have so rarely felt sure of myself. Yet I want so badly to be a parent. Not to fix myself, or to live my life differently through my child but to experience the love as a parent and to see the world through the eyes of a child.

I'm sorry you're feeling lonely. It has to be hard to maintain friendships etc due to all your traveling. For whatever it's worth, I would totally come to your party!

(oh...and you'll be a fantastic parent, I have no doubt)

Count me in too! It's funny because I was just recently reflecting on my "friendships" and how so many of them have gone by the wayside. Some of them I know exactly why, and others I must be in the dark about because I really don't know. Life is just that way I guess. Friends come and go, and I suppose it's meant to be that way, so that we'll continue to form new friendships. My 7 year old informed us the other day that he is done playing with the 2 neighbor boys (brothers) because frankly "friendships are a lot of work!" lol Well he hit the nail right on the head. They are a lot of work, and I think subconciously we determine the ones that we want to put an effort towards and others we choose not to. Some friends are what I call "high maintenence friends". I've tried weeding those out, but sometimes they creep back in! Just know you're not the only lonely one out there pondering where life has brought you and where it's about to take you... hopefully things start looking up soon.

I wish I lived in California. We could have parties together! I often think of having parties, but then wonder who I'd invite. Most of the time people who have come to parties have been my family...which is nice, but shows to me I have no friends which depresses me.

Join a gym, take dance lessons or Italian lessons, volunteer your time, take knitting lessons, coach little league, share your talents, find others with similar interests.

Can you go to meetup website, and search some group meetings in your area there? For example, I go to reiki meetings and hiking, and I can't say that I found some close friends, but it made my life more interesting. and I also like to go to gym even though I'm 220 lbs now. It really makes me feel so much better in any sense, and I don't give a sh.t of what anyone thinks of me, and ellyptical training keeps me so busy that I immediatedly forget all my lonely thoughts:-) and it sure boosts my selfesteem. It just gives that awesome feeling - "I did it"! It takes 45 minutes of physical activity to generate those hormones of happinness - but it's SO worth it!!!

Sorry you're down. I've been feeling so isolated latey I totally get where you're coming from. If it's any comfort I don't know of any Sex and the City type girlfriend relationship IRL either.

M, I 2nd Meghan...I would TOTALLY come to your party girlie! Now, I removed my counselor hat so I won't sound clinical. I will answer your question though. YES. Yes a parent with little or no self esteem CAN build it in their child. Does it take conscious effort and desire to build this in your child, YES. Can you do it, ABSOLUTELY! Sometimes it works, Sometimes it doesn't, but such is life and we never know how it will turn out. The hard part is walking the line of a child filling the void of a lonely life, no child desrves that heavy responsibility just as you said. The great news is, you mention you know you don't want a child to do that. Look at me, my Mother has always lacked self esteem and I, her daughter have always been filled to the brim with it and a love of myself that keeps me keepin on. My Mother was determined to do her best to build in me what she completely lacked. In her case it worked. If parenting is in your heart and you do YOUR best, Michell...what else can a human do? Here is a HUG to you from Florida:) The fact that you think about these situations, issues and topics really says WONDERFUL things about YOU and your ability to parent! I for one thick you will make ONE HELL of a GOOOOD Parent, Chica!

Oh sweetie - you would be awesome to have as an IRL friend. And don't doubt for a second that you will be an awesome parent. You have are a kind and genuine person with a lot of love in her heart - I know because of how much you have touched me even just through kind words. You have so much to offer a child, and you will someday - they will be blessed to have you as mom. ((hugs))

I hate that you're feeling this way and I know how awful poor self esteem is. I think nurses in general have problems with the friends thing because we work so much and work exclusively giving to others....so much so that we don't have much left to give to friends. Try some kind of club or hobby or class where you can meet some folks and have on common interest on which to build a friendship. Whether it's an exercise group, karate class, reading club, singles club...whatever, anything to spark a little fire in your life.
You do have so much to offer, you just can't see it.

I think our self esteem takes a major hit as a result of IF. I know mine did. I'm just now stitching it back together...don't be too hard on yourself. You're a beautiful person!

I used to feel this way years ago- and now I have a way too busy social life. Someone told me it can take at least a year in one place before you start forming a social network.

Sweetie, while we might not talk often - I do read your blog and follow what's been going on in your life...HUGS Bec

On a different note - after we moved here our "social life" went in the cr**per - since I work from home I have about 10% of the social daily contact I used to have - so, it is the 2 of us (or rather the 6++ of us - "mommies babies" don't leave for much alone time! :-) Any regrets, not a one - I think after years of too much social life I am more than content staying home, working like an i**ot at times and enjoying DH & the kids' company :-) Do we go out - sure, but for a meal on the weekends and maybe seeing a movie every 6 mos or so - I do need to get my "translators A**" back to the gym - "sitting still for hours"-work makes for a rather unhealthy lifestyle and I really need to make some changes - I have always lived by the motto that "life is what you make it" and still do to this day - we all change and make changes :-)
